SS-31 (Elamipretide) is a mitochondria-targeted tetrapeptide that concentrates in the inner mitochondrial membrane. It was developed specifically to protect mitochondrial function and has been in multiple Phase 2 and Phase 3 clinical trials.

What It Does

SS-31 protects mitochondrial structure and function, reduces oxidative stress, improves ATP production, and reduces inflammation. In animal studies it reversed age-related muscle weakness and significantly improved exercise capacity.

How It Works

SS-31 binds to cardiolipin, a phospholipid found exclusively in the inner mitochondrial membrane. By stabilizing cardiolipin, SS-31 protects the electron transport chain, reduces electron leak (which generates free radicals), and improves ATP synthesis efficiency.
